Have a budget

We know not everyone gets excited at the prospect of doing up a spreadsheet to balance their income and outgoings. But it really helps. It helps you control your spending and avoid getting into debt.

It can also help you save for unexpected expenses.

We’ll go into budgeting in more depth here.

Keep an eye on your spending

Mobile Bank has a built-in spending overview that can help you see your outgoings across different categories like housing costs and eating out.

You can also ask the app to tell you when something leaves your account (under Settings then Notifications) and, if you don’t check your balance that often, ask us to text you when your balance gets too low.

Lodging money if you’re not near a branch

If you need to lodge cash to your Danske account, remember you can do this at any UK Post Office® branch if you have your debit card with you.

Take away the takeaways

If you’re a stranger to the kitchen, try your hand at cooking by making some simple, but nutritious dishes External link icon that could last you a couple of days, dependent on the ingredients used of course.

You might be pleasantly surprised about how much better you feel. Not to mention how much money you could save.

Bills, bills, bills

Rent. Electricity. Gas. Broadband. Your mobile. Transport. Course materials.

Some of these can be shared out amongst you and your housemates, and it’s a good idea to set up a separate current account to pay shared bills, and ask everyone in the house to pay their share in every month.

Of course there are some easy ways to save money – see if you can get your course materials second hand (assuming they’re still relevant and up-to-date) and turn devices and lights off if nobody’s using them

Remember to shop around – don’t accept automatic renewals or commit to the first quote you get for anything. Have a look at Money Saving Expert for ways to save money on bills External link icon.

And of course, if you’re a student you get discount on (nearly) everything!
